New steel manufacturing jobs are coming to Smyrna. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development recently announced that Steel Technologies LLC plans to build a new facility right here in town. The location would be the company’s second in Rutherford County and a testament to Smyrna’s growing popularity.
Steel Technologies anticipates investing a total of $18 million into construction of the new 83,000-square-foot facility. This new expansion will generate a total of 50 jobs, which would be in addition to the 87 jobs at the company’s current Murfreesboro location. Tennessee’s steel product manufacturing employment rate is about 26% above the national average. This made Smyrna an easy selection for Steel Technologies, a known industry leader.
According to company officials, the new location is expected to handle both steel and aluminum operations. Steel Technologies views the expansion as an opportunity to better serve existing clients and attract new customers by growing its exposed and unexposed automotive slitting and blanking capabilities. This process will include installation of a slitting line and a 1,000-ton blanking press.
All signs point to mid-summer as the starting point for construction of the new facility. The plant is slated for completion by the end of the first quarter of next year. Steel Technologies will begin hiring for the new facility in late 2016 or early 2017.
Currently, Steel Technologies is one of the top North American steel processors. The company is known for processing flat-rolled steel to a specific thickness, width, temper, finish, and shape. Steel Technologies serves customers in virtually every market, including automotive, appliance, lawn and garden, agriculture, office furniture, construction, hardware, and consumer goods. The company now operates 24 facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where it collectively employs more than 1,800 people and generates over $2 billion in annual sales.
