For Smyrna resident Steve Johnson, leather working has been a lifelong passion. Steve was introduced to the craft while growing up in southern Ohio, and he started making leather goods as a teenager. Little did Steve know that what began as a childhood pastime would grow into one of the most successful accessory shops in Smyrna, Tennessee: Buckle and Hide Leather.
Steve, who traveled for many years as a professional drummer, first put stakes down in Smyrna about 15 years ago. He initially marketed and sold a limited range of leather goods online; at local craft shows; and at the Nashville Flea Market, where he maintained a booth.
After tiring of spending so much time on the road touring, Steve decided to build a full-service leather goods business with his wife, Sharon. Sharon had grown up in the Smyrna area and been sewing since childhood, making her a perfect business partner for Steve.
Buckle and Hide Leather opened its first location on Lowry Street in February 2013 and its current location in July 2014. Steve can be found working in the shop day in and day out, and Sharon staffs the store as well when not working as a registered nurse. Since its founding, the store has grown tremendously and now offers a complete array of belts, wallets, apparel, and other accessories for purchase both in-store and online.
So what’s next for the business? According to Steve, Buckle and Hide Leather plans to continue bringing the classiest, highest quality leather goods and related items to the Smyrna community. Also on the horizon will be a fresh new website where residents, nonresidents, and wholesalers can purchase the latest belts, cuffs, and accessories gracing the shelves of the local store.
One thing’s for certain: this local favorite is one to watch in 2016!
